A Few of our Training Topics and Descriptions
Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF)
The
Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) uses a five-step process known to promote
youth development, reduce risk-taking behaviors, build assets and resilience,
and prevent problem behaviors across the life span. The idea behind SPF is to
use the findings from public health research along with evidence-based
prevention programs to build capacity at the state and community levels and in
the prevention field. This in turn will promote resilience and decrease risk
factors in individuals, families and communities.
The Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist Training
(SAPST)
The SAPST curriculum was
developed by CSAP’s Western CAPT in 1989, and adopted by CSAP’s National CAPT
steering committee, in response to the multiple requests from prevention
specialist in state agencies and community-based organizations. The training is designed to
provide an understanding of the discipline of the prevention of alcohol,
tobacco, and other drug abuse as it relates to communities, providers and
volunteers, in a fun, creative unique training that begins where people are at,
and which includes applications. The SAPST
curriculum is also designed to provide both pre-service and in-service
prevention professionals with up-to-date, evidence-based information to the
prevention field.
Evidence-based Prevention - The Science of Program Success
What is Evidence-based Prevention and why is
it so important? This workshop explains the theoretical foundation of
prevention and examines the data-driven strategies common to effective
prevention programs. Workshop attendees will be able to
identify effective data-driven prevention strategies and programs, increase
their knowledge of principles of effective prevention programs. And gain an
awareness of resources for continued study of emerging best practices in
prevention.
Cultural Competence
This
foundational framework of culture competence introduces participants to a
process that can be used to understand various growth stages of
diversity/inclusion, awareness and consciousness. This module fosters
growth by assessing and improving one’s thoughts and actions around diversity-related
issues.
Down on the Pharm - Emerging
Trends in Youth Drug Abuse
Have you ever heard of “pharming”?
Here’s a hint - it has nothing to do with cattle or corn. Have you ever heard
of the terms K2/Spice, MDPV or Bath Salts?
Patterns of youth drug abuse are changing on a daily basis, as is the
assortment of illicit drugs available to them. This interactive workshop will
explore current trends and provide statistical information and resources to
equip youth service professionals for facing the challenges ahead. Participants will be able to identify current trends in
substance abuse, increase their knowledge of substance abuse prevention
resources and gain an awareness of resources for continuous updates of
epidemiological data.
Asset building - Understanding
the Importance of Risk and Protective Factors
Risk and protective factor research began with
two PhDs and a team of researchers from the University of Seattle Washington.
In the early 1980s, Drs. J. David Hawkins and Richard F. Catalano conducted a
review of 30 years of youth substance abuse and delinquency research and
identified risk factors for adolescent drug abuse and delinquency. They have
continually updated this review.
Prevention according to their risk
factors/protective factors theory is based on a simple premise: To prevent a
problem, we need to identify the factors that increase the risk that the
problem will develop and then find ways to reduce the risk. This workshop
outlines risk and protective factor theory and offers participants hands-on
experience in implementing strategies to build assets in young people.
Exploring Environmental Prevention
Strategies
Much of prevention is focused on individual
attitudes, beliefs, behaviors and skills. Yet individuals do not make their
choices in a vacuum. In this training, we will explore the environmental
influences on individual alcohol and drug use choices. We will examine
effective strategies that can be used to impact the following environmental
factors: community norms, access & availability, media messages and policy
& enforcement. Participants will be
able to articulate the basic premises of the Public
Health Model; Identify the four areas of environmental change: community norms;
access and availability; media messages; and policy and enforcement. In addition, participants will be able to
identify which policies have been most effective in decreasing ATOD abuse and understand the role of media advocacy in policy change efforts and know the
key steps to an effective media advocacy initiative.
Community
Strategic Planning Retreats for Boards and Coalition Leaders
Our
trainers have provided customized facilitation of strategic planning,
especially for coalitions and environmental change efforts. Our master trainer
has provided this service most recently for the Sylvania Community Action Team
in Lucas County. She facilitated the group through an analysis of their current
strategies and activities, trained the group in environmental prevention
strategies, facilitated a gap analysis to identify key aspects of environmental
prevention missing in their current plan, and helped the group to create
priorities for the future.
Gambling
Prevention
With
problem gambling affecting approximately 4% of our population and the issue of
Casino gambling becoming more prevalent in Ohio, it is important that we are
educated on the effects of gambling problems in our society. This
workshop will explore gambling addiction and how to recognize the signs and
symptoms of gambling addiction. We will discuss tools and techniques to
prevent gambling addiction in youth and adults and explore how gambling
prevention can be incorporated in current ATOD prevention programs.
Participants will also explore how to create awareness about pathological and
problem gambling. They will also
recognize the signs and symptoms of problem and pathological gambling and
identify tools to prevent gambling addiction. Participants will also understand the similarities to drug
addiction.
Understanding
Generations in the Workplace
Understanding
Generations in the Workplace is an interactive diversity training that helps
participants better understand the general preferences of the four primary
generations in the US workplace. We will examine the impact of
stereotypes present in today’s workforce relative to: Veterans, Baby Boomers,
Generation X, Generation Y and Millennial. Participants are exposed to
the history and collective experiences of each generation.

alcohol and other drug abuse prevention; understand the lessons learned from
past prevention efforts; discuss the accepted definition of prevention for
Ohio; gain an understanding of what prevention is NOT and explore promising
approaches currently in use.
It’s Only Weed, Right?
Marijuana use is
on the rise, and so are the number of myths and misunderstandings about this
drug. As a result of this workshop,
participants will be able to separate fact from fiction by learning the latest
research on both health and impairment effects.
